To have embraced with a whole heart the sacred study of yoga is to have embarked on the most meaningful journey I will ever take. I was given an introduction to yoga in 2003 while studying theatre arts at Mount Royal College here in Calgary. At the time, I thought that accolades and applause were my ticket to happiness. At the same time, I was intrigued by the physical postures of yoga and their connection to feeling, and began practicing on my own. When a severe depressive episode led to the decision to drop out of school, the practice of yoga in combination with therapy was like a lens that gave me renewed focus. Extraordinary healing has taken place, and continues to. When I was led to the discovery of ashtanga yoga in 2005, the exhilaration and strength I derived from the practice (and a little bit of prompting from a couple of my teachers) inspired me both to deepen my commitment to it and to pass it on to others. While my love for the traditional ashtanga practice practice remains strong, my studies of yoga have expanded to include individualized therapeutic application. I'm now back at Mount Royal College, this time studying to be a yoga therapist with highly respected professionals in the field. Since yoga therapy is considered an emerging profession, I feel very honored and privileged to be part of it's emergence.
Today the ancient teachings of yoga have more relevance than ever. In my own experience, which does include a long time history of periods of depression, the beauty of yoga lies in the affirmation of personal empowerment. I believe that within every one of us resides the innate ability and wisdom to heal ourselves. It is because of my practice that I now know exactly who I am and recognize that I have infinite potential. I realize the importance of the mind, but endeavor to live authentically from the heart...and encourage others to do the same. My love and gratitude goes out to all the beautiful teachers and students that have guided me so far, all that came before them, and those still to come.
So go on, live your truth, follow your bliss!
Love, Emily
